10° 23.416' N 75° 34.302' W 22 Nov 2018 14:21 None None None We're off for Jamaica again. Autopilot happy so far. A bit of unfavorable wind expected later today and tonight but otherwise looks OK. Cartagena was a good stop despite the heat and dirty water in the harbor. Met some very nice cruisers, enjoyed the friendly people of the yacht club, and the city.
10° 24.529' N 75° 32.5' W 17 Nov 2018 14:01 None None None Autopilot back from hydraulics repair man. Pump seals had failed and were rebuilt. Will reinstall and reconfigure electronics and then wait for weather. Looks like we will have to wait several days for NE winds to calm down and turn more eastward before we can set out again. Time to be Colombia tourists for a few days.
10° 24.529' N 75° 32.5' W 10 Nov 2018 14:07 None None None We are not on our way to Jamaica. We are in Cartagena, Colombia. Just before dinner last night I heard an alarm go off on our autopilot. We had been motor sailing using the autopilot most of the day. The error message implied that the problem was with my hydraulic ram, 22 years old and one of the only original pieces of gear on the boat. We have been waiting for it to fail and it looks like it has. A night of hand steering as we motored into a building wind and sea did nothing for our spirits. Our destination became Cartagena some 60 miles distant rather than 500 or so to Jamaica. We are now anchored off the local cruiser's yacht club and trying to sort out our next steps.
9° 57.27' N 77° 22.375' W 09 Nov 2018 09:30 None None None Still heading east with the light NNE winds. No moon last night but a clear sky full of stars. Not a bad way to start a passage. Saw a whale at dusk and 10-15 ships heading East from the Canal parallel to our course. Our plan is still to head north for Jamaica sometime after midnight tonight. We shall see...
9° 44.068' N 79° 21.987' W 08 Nov 2018 09:30 None None None On our way to hopefully Jamaica.Had a great time at Shelter Bay. Met some nice people, provisioned, and got Shango in very good shape for her passage. We are taking a circuitous route to get North. We are planning on motoring eastward for a day or two while light north winds allow us to do so and then when the stronger and more normal easterly winds kick in we will head north. Let's hope it works.
