43° 40.58' N 70° 15.02' W 31 Aug 2019 16:14 None None None Maine Yacht Center. Early end to the season for Kite as we head into land travel and shoreside plans. She's happily on the hard, right next to another Valiant 42 (whose owner we have yet to meet) to keep her company through the winter.
43° 39.85' N 70° 14.25' W 16 Aug 2019 16:13 None None None Portland. Home again with Kite snug on her mooring, next to the ever-growing luxury yacht-oriented Fore Points Marina.
43° 44.71' N 70° 1.57' W 16 Aug 2019 00:22 None None None Potts Harbor. No wind today, but at least we got to see another sailfish. Checked this one out pretty carefully which was easy with the flat, glassy sea state. They really are very strangely designed. Someone reported it to the Coast Guard as a sick or dead whale right after we saw it. It's easy to see how one would think that if they've never come across a sailfish before. Also a super close large-ish whale, we think a pilot whale after consulting our trusty "Offshore Wildlife," which surfaced no more than 30 feet in front of Kite and then swam right by us. Good day for sea critters.
43° 49.38' N 69° 42.5' W 15 Aug 2019 00:16 None None None Five Islands, Sheepscot River. Used the spinnaker again today! We've been really lucky with some wonderful sailing. Another super attractive mostly working harbor, this one with several free moorings provided by the local yacht club. How nice is that? Cruised RIGHT BY a sailfish this afternoon. What a weird creature. After we picked up our mooring we dinghied couple of miles for drinks at Robinhood Marina - once the site of a thriving little town, now a thriving, friendly marina complex. Attractive area, with a mix of working boats and summer homes.
43° 58.27' N 69° 11.64' W 14 Aug 2019 01:14 None None None Long Cove, Tenants Harbor, on a friend's mooring. If it wasn't for the lobster pots which demand absolute attention or else, Maine would be the perfect cruising ground. Well-tended little trail at nearby Maine Coastal Heritage Trust-managed High Island. Showers ($5 for the two of us) at Tenants Harbor Boatyard, yay! Pretty good (and expensive) lobster rolls and excellent strawberry-rhubarb pie for lunch at Luke's Lobster. This was our first visit to this new-ish group of Maine restaurants, with the flagship on the Portland waterfront. Then unexpectedly after dark, people set off fireworks all around the cove, some of them pretty impressive. Nice treat, though the birds probably wouldn't agree!
